SOFIE is a project undertaken by Indes in partnership with the University of Twente and Roessingh Research & Development. The goal of the project is to develop a Smart Assistive Bicycle with intelligent solutions that enable older people to cycle safely. The second aim is to acquire new knowledge on bicycle stability, especially where it concerns older cyclists.
According to statistics, the number of fatal accidents involving elderly cyclists is on the increase. Project researchers are investigating the causes and looking for products that will make cycling safer, more comfortable and more stable. Computer simulations developed at the UT are used to improve knowledge about bicycle stability and to test solutions effectively and safely in a simulated environment.
The project will take 4 years to complete.
